The Australian government has announced the introduction of
the Pacific Engagement Visa (PEV), a permanent residency program that grants up
to 3,000 permanent residency spots annually to Pacific Islanders.
The program offers Medicare and access to education, and it places a high priority on diversity and comprehensive assistance. It will begin in 2024 and offer up to 3,000 permanent spots each year to nationals of Timor-Leste and partner Pacific Island nations, as well as their immediate family members.
On October 19, 2023, the Australian government introduced
the Subclass 192 – Pacific Engagement visa, which represents a major change to
Australia's immigration policy. It seeks to supplement current permanent migration
programs and encourage the expansion of the Pacific diaspora by setting an
annual quota of 3,000. For the PEV, the government created a voting method to guarantee inclusivity and fairness. Candidates must be randomly
chosen, be between the ages of 18 and 45, have a documented work offer in
Australia, and fulfil additional conditions related to the visa, such as
character references, health tests, and English language skills.
Holders of the Pacific Engagement visa (PEV) are eligible
for several advantages, including Medicare, government-funded schooling,
and possibilities for higher education. The Social Programs and Other
Legislation Amendment (Australia's Engagement in the Pacific) Bill 2023 was
enacted by the Australian Parliament, granting instant access to several social
programs, including Youth Allowance, Austudy, Family Tax Benefit A, Higher
Education Loan Program (HELP), and VET Student Loans. Australia's dedication to
promoting diversity and building closer ties with its Pacific neighbours is
reflected in this project.
