Turkish Airlines has announced the cancellation of some
flights to and from Germany due to a planned aviation worker strike.
The union has called on security staff at major German airports to stage a one-day strike on Thursday, aiming to pressure employers in a pay dispute and improve working conditions.
The airlines cancelled flights to Hamburg, Berlin, Frankfurt,
Hanover, Dusseldorf, Leipzig, Stuttgart, and Cologne from Istanbul and Ankara.
Both Sabiha Gökçen Airport in Ankara, Turkey, and Istanbul Airport, located on
the Anatolian side, cancelled flights on Thursday. Additionally, flights to
Hamburg, Cologne, Paderborn, Berlin, Hamburg, and Dusseldorf were cancelled by
low-jet Pegasus Airlines. Dozens of planes were reportedly cancelled, according
to local media accounts.
Munich Airport will not be impacted by the planned strikes
by aviation workers at airports in other German towns and Erfurt. On behalf of
25,000 employees, the Verdi trade union is negotiating with the Federal
Association of Aviation Security Companies. After three rounds of negotiations,
Verdi is still demanding overtime bonuses and a raise to 2.80 euros ($3.03) per
hour for all workers. With concessions on overtime bonuses, the employers'
organization has proposed a 4% increase this year and a 3% increase the
following year. The next scheduled day of talks is February 6.
