Kuwait's government has announced the launch of an online
portal for obtaining part-time work permits, following a second-job policy for
private sector employees.
The government aim to resolve demographic imbalances and meet specific employment market needs by utilizing Kuwait's current workforce, of which a sizable portion is made up of foreigners. Companies can hire people for short-term projects or specialized work without committing to full-time roles as they have access to a larger talent pool. Part-time work is now an option for Kuwaiti nationals and expats to explore other revenue streams and possibly earn significant experience and skills, enhancing total economic involvement and promoting personal and professional growth.
Kuwaiti nationals can apply online for a part-time work
permit using a portal that needs some basic data and supporting documents. The
monthly fee is KD5, and the annual fee is KD30. Kuwaiti nationals are not
charged this fee. The contracting industry is excluded from the permit's
maximum four hours per day limit for second occupations because of its
particular workforce needs. But there are obstacles to overcome, like possible
conflicts with full-time employment, paying part-timers fairly, and tailoring
laws to certain industries.
The implementation of an online system for part-time work
permits in Kuwait is a noteworthy advancement in the country's labour market
dynamics, as it offers advantages to both individuals and enterprises, while
also bolstering the nation's economic and social progress. For it to be
successful in the long run, keeping an eye on its effects and resolving any new
issues is essential.
