About 500 Nigerians Stranded In Dubai Desperate To Come Home

About 500 stranded Nigerians in Dubai who are desperate to return home, have called on the government to intervene in their situations.

The stranded Nigerians who claimed to have lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 pandemic say they are desperate to return to the home country but unable to pay for the flight tickets.

The report confirmed that one of the Nigerians who traveled to the UAE in March on a tourist visa says “I came to the UAE in March looking for a job. I worked for one company, but at the end of the month, they did not pay me a salary. I left the company and their accommodation, since then I have not secured any other job and have nowhere to go".

Some of the stranded Nigerians said the price they placed on the evacuation flight is on the high side and that many of them could not afford it. They added that the best way to help people is to open Nigeria's airspace to enable them to come home with regular passengers' flights.

In the meantime, one Mr. Okoh from the Nigerian Consulate said: “The Nigerian mission in the UAE has so far conducted 10 evacuation flights with 2,667 Nigerians back home. There are two more flights on August 7 and 8. The mission is presently seeking approval for more flights to evacuate stranded Nigerians to return home.”

Many desperate Nigerians who could not afford to pay for the evacuation flights have been taking the alternative route by boarding flights to Cotonou, the Benin Republic, and then enter the country by the road saying since the government has refused to open the airspace they will find an alternative way of coming home through the neighboring countries.
