COVID-19: Gatwick Cancels More Flights Over Shortage Of Staff

Due to staff shortages in air traffic control caused by COVID-19, Gatwick Airport has reduced daily flights for the rest of the month of September.

This is the third time this month that air traffic control at the airport has slowed down, with easyJet being the most negatively impacted carrier. As a result, tens of thousands of travellers will experience delays, cancellations, or airport diversions.

The number of takeoffs and landings each day for airlines has been reduced from the anticipated 840 on Thursday, 865 on Friday, and 830 on Sunday to 800, a decrease of around 40 flights.

Gatwick's chief executive, Stewart Wingate, stated, “This has been a difficult decision but the action we have taken today means our airlines can fly reliable flight programmes, which gives passengers more certainty that they will not face last-minute cancellations.

“We are working closely with Nats to build resilience in the control tower, and this decision means we can prevent as many disruptions as possible. London Gatwick would like to apologise to any passengers impacted by these restrictions.”

A consultant psychiatrist from Angus named Daniel Wilkes has a reservation for the 7.15 p.m. flight from Gatwick to Edinburgh. At 8:40 p.m., it was cancelled.

“I just can’t believe the lack of contingency planning from Nats for staff sickness and that this is happening again.

China Drops Covid Testing Rules, Eases Travel Restrictions For Foreigners

China has announced that travellers will no longer need COVID-19 tests to enter the country starting August 30, 2023.

The elimination of COVID-19 testing requirements in China will make travel easier, entice more tourists, and strengthen the tourism business, which has been severely harmed by the pandemic.

The Chinese government's objectives of increasing the economy and reviving the travel industry are aligned with this action's enhancement of travel convenience and restoration of normalcy inside the nation. A return to pre-pandemic levels of international travel is still elusive despite agreements like the one between China and the US to enhance round-trip flights.

Due to safety worries, health hazards, visa issues, and expensive expenses, the pandemic has forced a 58% reevaluation of Chinese travellers' 2023 overseas travel plans. Despite this, foreign tourists are still wary of entering China. Although China has taken steps to boost its inbound tourism industry and promote recovery, the desire for international travel has been muted by stricter travel controls and greater safety precautions, which has led to a decrease in foreign visitor arrivals. The tourism sector of the economy has suffered as a result.

To rekindle interest in the tourism industry and make travelling to China more enticing, the Chinese government reopened visa applications and reinstated visa-free regulations in March 2023. This action, which eliminates the need for COVID-19 testing, is viewed as a step in the right direction for economic expansion.

US Ends Vaccine Requirement for International Travelers

The United States government has announced that all COVID-19 travel restrictions will be lifted on May 11, 2023, which also happens to be the day on which the government's declared COVID-19 public health emergency will be lifted.

Beginning May 12, international visitors entering the United States by air, land, or sea won't need to provide documentation of their coronavirus vaccination. This was put in place to stop the transmission of new coronavirus variants and give healthcare systems the ability to manage patient access in the event of a rise in cases and hospitalizations.

In January 2021, the Biden administration declared that U.S. citizens and foreign visitors would need negative COVID-19 test results to enter the nation. Until June 2022, this regulation was in effect. Removing the limits will make it simpler for foreign tourists to visit the United States, which is anticipated to boost the nation's competitiveness in the tourism sector. The move would help streamline admission into the country, according to the vice president of public affairs and policy of the U.S. Travel Association, but the federal government must make sure that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers are appropriately staffed at U.S. airports and other ports of entry.

According to estimates, the travel sector will lose $7 billion in revenue as a result of longer visa wait periods for first-time visitors to the US in 2023. The U.S. Travel Association is pleading with Congress to staff CBP with more personnel. Some nations, including Kenya and Brazil, still demand that visitors present proof of either a COVID-19 vaccination or a negative PCR or antigen test before they are admitted.

China Drops Inbound Travelers PCR Test Requirements.

China has announced that it will no longer require PCR tests for visitors by the end of the month. Passengers will only be required to present a negative quick antigen test result.

The country announced the easing of COVID-related restrictions in January, although it was still necessary for visitors to show proof of a negative PCR test before entering. Starting on April 29th, this requirement will no longer apply. However, travelers will still need to present a COVID antigen test result obtained within 48 hours of departure.

"We will continue to refine prevention and control policies in a science-based manner in light of the evolving epidemic situation to ensure safe, healthy, and orderly personnel exchange between China and other countries,” the foreign ministry spokeswoman, Mao Ning stated.

According to Mao, airlines won't be compelled to verify the validity of antigen test findings. China had earlier this year dropped its PCR requirement for many countries but left it in place for a few. Following an increase in COVID cases throughout China, several nations, including the US, introduced mandatory testing of Chinese immigrants. This prompted the Chinese authorities to maintain their own testing schedule. Starting on April 29th, five consecutive days of public holidays will start, and the regulation change will take effect on the same day.

US Lifts COVID-19 Tests Rules for Travelers from China

The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is set to end mandatory COVID-19 tests for travelers from China on Friday.

In response to Beijing's move to relax strict zero-COVID laws, the United States, along with countries like India, Canada, Italy, Japan, and others, has introduced unique mechanisms to monitor cases of COVID-19 in China and elsewhere in the world. The action follows the removal of comparable rules by other nations, including Japan.

China established a zero-COVID policy in December, requiring new air travelers to present a negative test result two days before they depart. This resulted in an increase in COVID-19 cases, which then caused a virus outbreak in its 1.4 billion population. With the lowest fatality rate in the entire world, China's officials declared "great success" in February.

The US expanded its volunteer genetic sequencing program at airports in December to include Seattle and Los Angeles. The Traveler-based Genomic Surveillance Program (TGS) solicits volunteers among travelers to help in the early identification of novel variations. The CDC will keep using the TGS program to keep track of flights coming from China and other nations.

Malta Drops COVID Testing Requirement for Travellers From China

After assessing the current COVID situation and determining that there is no risk, Malta has lifted the testing requirement for all arrivals from China. This decision was made in response to a gathering of health experts from EU member states last week.

The health experts from the EU member states stated during this meeting that the circumstances surrounding the Coronavirus in China allow for the progressive easing of the restrictions. But, the EU health experts emphasized that the bloc's authorities would continue to monitor COVID developments in China and take action if the situation worsens. This was despite the decision to remove the entrance requirement for travelers from China.

“In light of the recent epidemiological developments and taking into account the opinion of the Health Security Committee, Member States agree to phase out the requirement for a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test for travelers from China to Member States by the end of February,” the EU Council's Sweden Presidency said.

By the middle of the next month, the Council had resolved to stop randomly testing travelers from China. This implies that responsible authorities at EU airports will only arbitrarily choose Chinese tourists to submit to a COVID test. Due to the coronavirus, several EU members will soon remove their bans on Chinese travelers entering their countries. This is in addition to Malta. The necessary pre-departure testing requirements and random screenings on arrival will no longer apply to arrivals from China, according to a statement from the French Embassy in Beijing. France has already withdrawn the testing requirement for all arrivals from China.

“Travellers from China to France are no longer required to present the result of a negative test or fill a health declaration form. Random screenings on arrival are also abolished,” the embassy said.

France Lifts COVID Testing For Travelers From China

The French government has announced its decision to abolish the COVID testing requirement and random checks upon arrival for all travelers from China.

This decision was made, according to the French Embassy in Beijing, after a review of the present coronavirus situation in China revealed that the incidence of infections has drastically decreased. "Travelers from China to France are no longer required to present the result of a negative RT-PCR test within 48 hours or fill out a health declaration form. "Random screenings on arrival are also abolished," the French embassy in Beijing stated.

Following a conference of EU health experts, France concluded that such restrictions are no longer required. Earlier in January, France agreed to demand a mandatory test for all visitors from China who were older than 11. This week, health professionals from every EU member state met and decided to gradually remove COVID restrictions on travelers from China by the end of this month.

According to the Swedish President of the EU Council, the EU will continue to follow the developments of the coronavirus in China and will act in response to these developments.

"Member States agree to phase out the requirement for a negative pre-departure COVID-19 test for travelers from China to Member States by the end of February," the council stated.

COVID restrictions on travelers from China will be lifted by the end of this week, and by the middle of March, the Council will gradually end random traveler testing. According to World Health Organization data, China has reported 126,414 new instances of COVID-19 infection during the past seven days, along with 449 fatalities. Also, China has loosened the restrictions on entry for foreign tourists, enabling them to enter freely.

Germany To Lift All COVID Restrictions...

Authorities in Germany have disclosed the intention to remove the remaining Covid-19 restrictions, including the mask-wearing and testing requirements for staff members and residents of healthcare and nursing homes.

The decision to remove the requirement that workers and residents of healthcare and nursing facilities wear face masks and submit to testing beginning in March was taken after it was discovered that the COVID situation throughout the nation is under control, according to the federal states' health ministers. Nonetheless, visitors to hospitals, doctor's offices, and care facilities will still be required to wear masks.

According to Karl Lauterbach, the federal minister of health, the situation is controllable and no strict measures are required.

He stated, “The pandemic is not yet over, but it has lost its fear factor. The virus can be controlled in everyday life.” 

German coronavirus prevention measures have already started to lighten up recently. Germany officially ceased requiring masks on buses and long-distance trains earlier this month as a result of the downward trend in COVID infection cases. According to Minister Lauterbach, there is no longer a need for this measure because the number of Coronavirus infection cases has decreased by 50% since December 2022 and the number of hospitalizations has also decreased.

Germany decided to eliminate COVID restrictions once it became obvious that the nation would not be expecting another COVID wave. According to information from the World Health Organization, 61 further deaths have been reported along with 81,005 new cases of COVID infection in the last seven days. As of February 10, 2023, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), Germany had delivered 194,174,719 doses of the coronavirus vaccine, with 73.0% of adults receiving the first booster and 18.0% receiving the second.

Singapore Eases Travel Restrictions For Visitor

The health officials of Singapore have announced the relaxation of certain travel restrictions for visitors entering the country. The new move is to grant non-fully vaccinated travelers entrance to the country. Singapore is taking significant steps toward recovering from the acute phase of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Singapore is no longer mandating travelers who are yet to  receive all recommended vaccinations to present COVID-19 test results or acquire coronavirus travel insurance Starting February 13. 

However, according to the ministry of health, all travelers arriving in Singapore by air or sea must still present a health declaration before or upon arrival.

In the event of global changes that warrant alarm, such as new varieties, immunized travel lanes will remain “for reactivation.” The COVID task force will be abolished, and wearing a mask indoors or on public transportation will no longer be required, but the ministry of health still advises people to do so if they exhibit any symptoms.

The relaxation of COVID-19 travel restrictions for travelers who are not fully immunized and the lifting of the ban on mask use in public transportation and indoor health facilities marks a significant step toward Singapore’s return to normalcy. Still, officials urge residents to continue using safe health practices to keep the pandemic under control.

India Ends Covid Testing Requirement For International Travelers

India has announced that travelers from certain countries will no longer be required to present a pre-departure Covid test or file a self-health declaration.

The Union Health Ministry in India has updated its policies for visitors from China, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, and Singapore. All travelers from these nations will no longer be required to present a negative result from a pre-departure Covid test or upload a self-health declaration to the "Air Suvidha" portal beginning at 11 AM on Monday, February 13, 2023.

After noticing a "sustained and significant drop in the trajectory of Covid-19 cases" in certain nations during the previous four weeks, the decision to modify testing standards for international travelers traveling from or via these countries was made. The number of newly confirmed cases across the globe in the previous 28 days has decreased by 89%, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). India has also experienced a downward trend, with fewer than 100 new cases reported daily.

The random testing of 2% of foreign visitors in India would continue, irrespective of the place of origin, despite the reduction in the pre-departure testing criteria. The 2% random testing has been implemented to track infections caused by altered SARS-CoV-2 strains among foreign visitors to India.

Spain Lifts Mask Requirement On Public Transports

Spain has announced that all categories of travelers both citizens and visitors will no longer be required to wear a face mask on public transport starting February 7.

After assessing the COVID situation and coming to the conclusion that there is "epidemiological stability," the Spanish government decided to remove the necessity for wearing a mask when riding public transportation. The restriction will nevertheless continue to apply to all healthcare professionals and guests accessing healthcare facilities.

The Spanish government stated, “The government will put an end to the obligation to wear a mask on public transport, but it will remain in health establishments.”

As soon as the decision officially takes effect, nationwide coordination of coronavirus measures will be made, according to Carolina Darias, Spain's minister of health. The International Council of the National Health System approved all COVID initiatives.

In Spain, there have been 9,053 COVID infection cases over the past seven days, along with 278 new fatalities. With high vaccination rates, 85.9% of adults have finished their primary vaccinations, 67.4% have had their first booster injection, and 22.2% have received their second booster shot.

US to Scrap Foreign Traveler COVID Vaccine Requirement

The United States US Covid vaccine requirement for foreign travelers may soon be scrapped following the US House of Representatives announcement to decide by the end of the week whether or not to eliminate the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for travelers from outside the country. The obligation was only recently brought forward to April, but if the law is passed, it might now be removed much earlier.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has not yet commented on the upcoming vote. The CDC has previously stated that vaccinations continue to be the most effective weapon in the fight against COVID-19. All adult US travelers are required to provide documentation of their vaccinations before boarding a flight. Citizens and permanent residents of the United States are exempt from this.

According to the US Travel Association, there have "long supported the removal of this requirement and sees no reason to wait until the expiration of the public health emergency - particularly as potential visitors are planning spring and summer travel."

The CDC lists the current regulations for foreign visitors entering the US on its website. It reads, “Non-citizens who are non-immigrants and seeking to enter the United States by air are required to show proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 before boarding a flight to the United States from a foreign country. If you are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19, you will NOT be allowed to board a flight to the United States, unless you meet the criteria for an exception under the Proclamation and CDC’s Amended Order. A booster dose is not needed to meet this requirement.”

Persons traveling on official business for their country of residence, minors under the age of 18, and those with valid medical reasons not to receive the COVID-19 vaccine are all excluded from the requirement.

FG Re-enforces Covid-19 Travel Measures On Travelers

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reinstated the Covid-19 travel requirements it removed some months ago. The Federal Government took the decision to reinstate the Covid-19 travel protocols on travelers after some countries especially European countries restricted travelers from China due to rising cases of Covid-19 in the country.

All travelers coming to Nigeria are now required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination or get vaccinated at the airport upon arriving in the country. 

According to Geoffrey Okatubo, the director of port health services, "the port health service had upgraded its surveillance at the country’s points of entry due to the spike in COVID-19 cases in the U.S., China, and Japan."

The decision comes in response to an increase in COVID-19 cases in those countries. All pre-departure and post-arrival PCR test requirements have been removed for individuals who are not fully vaccinated. The Nigeria International Travel Portal will no longer require all travelers to upload proof of vaccination (NITP).

However, “port health service has resumed checks of passengers’ vaccination status and will provide traffic data on inbound passengers from other countries.

“All international travelers arriving in Nigeria are now to provide evidence of vaccination at the point of entry and it was agreed that unvaccinated passengers arriving from other countries may have to be vaccinated at the airport.

“The minister of health also recently approved that port health services should meet with other stakeholders such as the NCDC, and the ministry of aviation over the use of rapid diagnostic testing at points of entry.”

China Urged France To Drop COVID Entry Requirements For Chinese Travelers

French authorities have been urged by the Chinese government to lift travel restrictions imposed on travelers from China as a result of the Coronavirus.

According to Mao Ning, a Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs representative, "these restrictions are biased. This follows the declaration that France would extend its entry requirements until February 15. There will be mandatory COVID testing for everyone traveling from China to France."

France's Minister of Health, François Braun, described the COVID-19 situation in China as "worrying" and emphasized that the nation is no longer experiencing a high rate of hospitalizations.

"We are declining considerably, including with regard to people in hospitals, but what is going on in China is worrying," Minister Braun stated.

China has identified 156,252 new COVID-19 infection cases in the past seven days. China recorded 3,113 additional deaths during the same time period. This month, European Union members came to an agreement to implement basic safety measures. All member states should enact a pre-boarding test requirement for all passengers traveling out of China.

Meanwhile, The Swedish Ministry of Health has announced that all travelers from China will continue to be required to present a negative COVID test result taken before their arrival. The testing requirement which will remain in place for another couple of weeks will apply to everyone irrespective of the vaccination status.

China Introduces New Measures for International Travelers

The Chinese Government has announced that passengers traveling to China must submit a nucleic acid test within 48 hours of boarding due to the ongoing Class B infectious disease status of COVID-19 in China. Only those with negative results will be allowed entry to China.

Starting from January 17, 2023, airlines flying to China will have to verify nucleic acid test certifications before boarding. Upon arrival, travelers' certificates will be randomly checked by China Customs. Only individuals with negative results from a nucleic acid test are permitted to go to China, which must be done within 48 hours of boarding. By completing the Health Declaration Form, travelers must inform Chinese customs of their negative test results.

After arriving, travelers should use the customs health declaration code to precede through the required customs processes. They will be permitted to cross the border if their health declarations are regular and periodic quarantine inspections reveal no irregularities. Travelers are advised to closely abide by the local authorities regulations for the prevention and control of epidemics.

Test or report publication time (at least one should be within 48 hours before boarding), test strategy (should be nucleic acid testing; please note that antigen detection is not accepted). Test outcomes (if negative, test results stated as "uncertain" or "grey zone" will not be obtained). Use English or the official language of the nation of departure, as determined by the airlines operating the flight to China.

EU Drops Mask Mandate, As Italy & Spain Still Impose It On Planes.

The European Union (EU) has announced that it will relax the face masks policy. However, the mask law is still in place in Spain and Italy. Spain's government stated that the restriction will not likely alter in the next few days or weeks.

In a joint statement, the two bodies said, “Wearing face masks at airports and inflight should be aligned with national measures on wearing masks in public transport and transport hubs.”

According to the report, the Italian government confirmed on Friday that its stringent mask-wearing regulations continue to be in effect, including on flights into and out of the nation. 

On Wednesday, Spain's minister of health, Carolina Darias, stated, "Europe says that the mask on flights must be aligned with national regulations and in Spain, we only recently decided that in this context it remains mandatory.”

Iberia, the national airline of Spain, indicated that it would continue to require masks in the coming weeks to safety recommendations from the Spanish aviation and health ministries. On April 20, Spain ended the requirement to wear a mask indoors, except in care facilities, hospitals, and public transportation.

According to Ryanair's announcement, face masks won't be required on the majority of its itineraries starting today. On flights to and from 14 particular nations, masks must nevertheless be worn. These are a few top ten vacation spots for Britons, such as Spain and France. Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey are among the nations where masks are still required.                                                                                                 

Germany To Lift Mask Requirement Inside Trains & Buses

The German authorities have announced that the mask requirement will no longer be in effect on long-distance trains and buses beginning from February 2, 2023.

After determining that the COVID-19 issue was under control, the decision was made. According to Germany's Federal Health Minister, Karl Lauterbach, infection cases have decreased by 50% over the previous month.

"The pandemic situation has stabilized. The incidence is only half as high as a month ago. The wastewater monitoring shows constant or falling values. In addition, the number of hospitalizations and hospital admissions fell. The situation there is tense but manageable," Minister Lauterbach stated.

The government also stated that the population has developed a high level of immunity, and it is anticipated that there won't be a winter wave anymore. Minister Lauterbach emphasized that wearing a face mask is entirely optional for anyone who chooses to do so.

"We are going into the endemic situation. But anyone who wants to protect themselves and others is of course still well served by wearing the mask—based on personal responsibility and voluntariness," Minister Lauterbach said.

In the past seven days, 163,625 new cases of coronavirus infection have been reported in Germany. Germany also reported 96 additional deaths within the same period. Germany's condition is still steady, but China's situation is different. Due to this, the German government has decided to mandate testing for all travelers from China.

EU to Re-impose COVID-19 Test For Arrivals From China

Due to the current rise in the number of COVID-19 cases being experienced in China, the member states of the European Union have decided to urge that all member states impose pre-departure testing for all travelers arriving from China as random testing upon arrival.

"The Member States are strongly encouraged to introduce, for all passengers departing from China for the Member States, the requirement for a negative COVID-19 test taken not more than 48 hours before departure from China," the Swedish Presidency of the Council of the European Union stated.

Additionally, the EU Member States recommend that everyone traveling to or from China use a face mask and provide health and personal hygiene tips. Also, EU nations are asked to maintain their efforts to encourage vaccination, including booster shots, especially among vulnerable populations.

"The IPCR, with the support of the ECDC and the EEAS and taking into account WHO assessment, will continue to monitor the epidemiological situation in the EU and developments in China, including the level of data shared, to ensure EU coordination of any measures considered necessary," it stated.

China is being criticized for withholding information about the current epidemiological crisis. Due to this, numerous nations have reinstated precautionary measures for travelers coming from China. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization, urged Chinese authorities to release hospitalization and mortality statistics more quickly and frequently.

Controversy has arisen among European nations over the need to put additional travel restrictions on entry from China due to the current epidemiological crisis there. Countries such as Spain, France, and Italy have stated that they will require COVID-19 tests for all travelers arriving from their countries.

France and Spain to Impose COVID-19 Entry Restrictions On Travelers from China

The French and Spanish authorities have imposed COVID-19 entry restrictions on passengers from China. This follows an increase in the number of coronavirus cases in China since the country reopened its borders in 2022. Travelers will now need to present negative COVID-19 test results or proof of complete vaccination against the virus.

According to the Spanish Ministry of Health, travelers from China will have to go through a documentary, visual, and temperature check as well as a diagnostic test for the SARS-CoV-2 infection that is now active at the point of entry into Spain. while France has also decided to implement health checks on flights from China, beginning next Thursday, January 5, 2023, by a decree signed on December 30 of last year.

The ministry stated, "The resolution also requires an EU Digital COVID Certificate (CCD-UE) or equivalent for all passengers on flights from China starting next January 3," adding that the measures will remain in effect until February 15, 2023.

"Faced with the resurgence of the COVID-19 epidemic in China and with a view to the very imminent reopening of the borders of this state, the decree establishes health control measures to ensure the protection of the French population."

Travelers from China to France must provide the negative findings of a coronavirus test performed within the last 48 hours of their trip. The Minister of Health has emphasized the importance of a complete and updated vaccination against the virus for the Spanish people. The new regulations will only apply to flights from the mainland People's Republic of China; travelers from other countries such as Hong Kong will not be affected.

The French and Spanish authorities have imposed COVID-19 entry restrictions on passengers from China.
