COVID-19: Jordan Delays Resumption Of International Flights

Jordan has announced an extension of the ban it placed on international flights. The international passenger's flight services that were suspended in March due to the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic and supposed to resume on Wednesday 5 August have been deferred.

In July, the Civil Aviation Commission chief Haitham Misto announced that Queen Alia International Airport in Amman would be reopened for commercial flight operations that will see the country welcoming passengers from about 22 low-risk countries.

The decision to defer the resumption date was made after the officials expressed concerns regarding the influx of international passengers, which could lead to an increase in Covid-19 cases.

Jordan, which has recorded relatively low coronavirus cases of about 1,230 with 22 deaths says there has been an increase in Covid-19 cases in neighboring Gulf countries, including Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon, which are major travel destinations from Jordan.

A Government spokesman Amjad Adailah stated that Queen Alia Airport will continue to operate repatriation flights for its citizens and residents.

The closure of Queen Alia International Airport has further increased the economic damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic as tourism happens to be a major source of international currency for Jordan.
