Ethiopian Airlines is currently in talks with the management of South African Airways over possible involvement in the rescue of the SAA. The head of the airline said.
According to sources, SAA hasn’t made any profit in the last decade and has been under a form of bankruptcy protection since 2019. Creditors have approved a restructuring plan, but the government needs to find at least 10 billion rands ($580 million) of funding for it to materialize.
"Some discussion is taking place between Ethiopian Airlines and the South African Public Enterprises Ministry," Tewolde Gebremariam said in a statement, "but it is at a very initial level and part of a general overview of pan-African cooperation in the aviation world between Ethiopian and SAA."
Officials have said they have received unsolicited interest in SAA but have revealed few details about that interest. SAA hasn’t operated commercial passenger flights since March when the government imposed a strict lockdown to contain the spread of the deadly virus.
