The management of the Manchester Airport Group (MAG) has announced its plan to cut over 800 jobs across the UK.
MAG, which also owns the London Stansted and East Midlands airports is reportedly planning to layoff more than 800 workers at its airports as it continues to struggle through the effect of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the reports, the company said on Wednesday that it has opened talks with airport unions about the job cuts. The group is planning to cut 465 positions at Manchester Airport, 376 at Stansted and, 51 at the East Midlands airport. MAG noted that passengers' volume has dropped by 75 percent in the wake of the pandemic, which has made it difficult for the company to cope with the economic situation.
According to the MAG CEO, Charlie Cornish in a statement to the news agency: “By now, we would have hoped to see a strong and sustained recovery in demand. Unfortunately, the resurgence of the virus across Europe and the reintroduction of travel restrictions have meant this has not happened.
In the meantime, the UK Government is considering ways to cut down the 14-day quarantine period and introduce airport testing for passengers from high-risk countries.
The move follows reactions from airline companies in the UK as they continue to witness low travel demand due to the government-imposed self-quarantine. There is high hope that airport testing will revive travel demand that is presently slumping.
