FAAN Vows To Tackle Corrupt Practices At Airports As Airline Staff Suspended For Taking Bribe

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced that any public or private sector official caught being involved in whatever form of corrupt practice would lose his or her job.

This was disclosed in Abuja by the Managing Director, FAAN, Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, after a meeting with security agencies and presidency officials on the eradication of indiscipline and other corrupt practices at the airports in the country.

According to him, "this and other measures had become necessary following the repeated trending online videos of passengers who were allegedly extorted by airports’ personnel and the embarrassment which such videos had brought to the country."

“We will have meetings with all the airports’ chiefs and heads of departments. After the meeting with them, we will meet with other stakeholders in the agencies and private entities.

“And this is primarily to inform them that henceforth all violators recorded or caught shall be escalated by FAAN, not necessarily within the airport anymore, rather we will write to the department at the airport, to the agency or company headquarters and the violator will lose his or her On Duty Card," Yadudu stated.

Meanwhile, Arik Air says it has suspended one of its staff members caught by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for allegedly demanding a bribe from a traveler at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

The management said this in a statement on Wednesday, saying that the action will teach other corrupt workers a lesson.

The airline management said it would also conduct an internal investigation and cooperate with FAAN on the matter.

“The management of Arik Air has suspended with immediate effect one of its staff caught by the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for soliciting bribe at the domestic wing of the Murtala Mohammed International, Ikeja, Lagos, pending further investigations.” The statement reads.

“While the management conducts its own internal investigation, we wish to reassure FAAN of our cooperation on this matter if further investigation is required. We fully support what FAAN is doing to rid our airports of this menace of corruption.”  Arik Air stated.
