Kenya Airways Recalls Sacked Workers As Travel Industry Regains Traffic

Kenya's national carrier, Kenya Airways (KQ) has recalled some of the staff it laid off during the 2020 restructuring, post covid.

Kenya Airways like many other airlines across the world officially announced the sack of many of its staff in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic which battered the travel business worldwide in order to cope with the financial impact of the pandemic.

The carrier has already commenced the process of re-hiring of the fired staff for the last two months. KQ's decision to recall some of its former staff follows the high demand the industry is now witnessing. This high demand has led to great competition among flight operators.

According to an official at the airline, "there has been a growing demand in recent days and the carrier has added some frequencies to accommodate a rising number of passengers, hence the need for increasing manpower. We have seen an increase in demand and that is why we are recalling some of our employees,' an official from the carrier says.

Kenya Airways, 'the pride of Africa' as it is fondly called, introduced a larger aircraft to Mombasa last month following a high number of passengers on the route. The carrier upgraded the aircraft on the route to a Boeing 737-800 from an Embraer 190.

The carrier also increased its frequencies to be able to cope with the rising number of passengers on both local and international routes. It also increased its frequencies to the UK after the UK government removed Kenya from its list of the red list countries. The pride of Africa has also commenced flights to France after it suspended it for a while.

According to the chief executive of the airline, Allan Kilavuka during investors briefing recently, "the company's financial situation is precarious, saying that the long recovery prospects and diminishing revenue in an environment of increased costs due to tight health and safety measures mean it will require a bailout to stay afloat."
