The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced the arrest of about 90 Airport staff over corrupt practices.
The 90 persons were arrested at both Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. FAAN says the arrest is part of its efforts to sanitize and get rid of the corrupt practices at the airports in the country.
"As part of the efforts to rid the nation's airport of touting and extortion, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has arrested over 90 persons caught at both the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, carrying out nefarious activities," FAAN says.
The suspects were arrested for their alleged involvement in some illegal activities which include facilitating the issuance of fake Covid-19 test results, providing fake yellow cards for travelers, short-changing travelers under the pretense of assisting them with their boarding process, and acting as intermediaries between passengers and airlines.
According to a statement by the FAAN spokesperson, Mrs, Henrietta Yakubu, “Of the total arrested, 59 were handed over to the airport police command in Abuja for prosecution, while 30 were handed over to the police force in Lagos for same"
“FAAN will like to use this opportunity to warn those that do not have any legitimate business at the airports, as well as airport staff carrying out illegal duties to desist from such acts, as the authority will not hesitate to arrest and hand over such individuals for prosecution,’’ Yakubu says.
