The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has warned that the scarcity of aviation fuel, also known as Jet A1, could interrupt flight operations, leaving many Nigerians stranded for the Christmas and New Year holidays.
According to a statement from Prof. Obiora Okonkwo, spokesman for AON and chairman of United Nigeria Airlines, the product's scarcity began a few days ago.
"The AON wishes to inform the general public of
impending disruptions in scheduled flight operations due to the scarcity of
aviation fuel, otherwise known as JET-A1, which reared its ugly head again in
the past few days.
"The scarcity will no doubt force airlines to
reschedule flights, leading to late operations and, possibly,
cancellations."
"This unintended development is a stumbling
block for airline operators and a stain on the industry, especially at this
time of mass movement of people for the Christmas and New Year
festivities," the airline operator said.
The AON said: "We do our utmost best to manage
the situation and ensure safe flight operations; we plead the understanding of
the traveling public in the circumstance."
To lessen the burden
it causes the traveling public, AON further urged the relevant authorities,
including product importers and marketers, to try their best to fix this awful
situation.
"As airline operators, we remain committed to doing all that is necessary to ensure seamless services and safe air travel in our dear country," it stated.
