Due to staffing shortages, Lufthansa, Germany's national carrier, plans to cancel about 34,000 of the flights scheduled for this summer.
According to a representative for Lufthansa, "due to staffing shortages and other problems, the airline has approved its summer 2023 timetable. Despite canceling over 30,000 flights, everyone affected will be notified in advance to prevent last-minute cancellations. They want to make sure everyone has time to make other plans and adapt their travel schedules, so they wish to inform passengers as early as possible.
The staff strike on
Friday hit Lufthansa and led to the cancellation of 1,300 flights. The
airline's Member of the Executive Board, Michael Niggemann, expressed sadness
for the effects on passengers and emphasized how vulnerable the aviation
industry stands.
"We are not a party to the
collective bargaining and have no influence on it; nevertheless, we are its
guests and massively affected. More than 1,300 flight
cancellations for Lufthansa Group airlines alone show once again how vulnerable
and fragile the air transport system is to strike activity," Niggemann said.
Passengers affected by the 24-hour strike, which closed Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hanover, and Bremen airports, received alternative solutions from Lufthansa. Verdi issued a strike summons for his employees since the appropriate authorities have done very little to improve their working conditions and increase their pay. A Verdi board member named Christine Behle stated that the German airports continue to suffer from a severe labor shortage, which is mainly felt by passengers.
