The United Kingdom, UK government has announced its decision to introduce Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA), a travel authorization requirement, in November 2023. According to the UK authority, the travel requirement will not be implemented for EU citizens until the following year.
Travelers to the UK who do not require a visa will soon be subject to the new requirement of having an ETA. From November 15, 2023, citizens of Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates will require an ETA to enter the UK. But, given that no EU member states are yet on the list, EU citizens won't need to obtain one until after February 2024.
According to
the UK government, individuals who obtain an ETA are eligible for a three-month
creative worker visa concession as well as a six-month entry and stay permit in
the country for family or friend visits, business travel, or educational
purposes. An ETA application must be submitted online, either through the UK
ETA app or the official government website, and processing timeframes are
expected to be three working days. It may need more or fewer days, depending on
whether the authorities conduct additional checks.
"You’ll
need to apply on the UK ETA app or online at GOV.UK. You’ll usually get a
decision within three working days, but you may get a quicker decision. It may
take longer than three working days if we need to make further checks," the UK
government stated.
The UK is establishing the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETA) to bolster its security and borders. Each traveler will need to submit their own ETA application, which is estimated to cost less than obtaining a visa. Such systems are already in use in several other nations, and the EU is set to introduce one.
