New Zealand Extends Work Visa Validity To Five Years

New Zealand has extended the validity of work visas for eligible migrants for up to 5 years, aiming to attract and retain skilled migrants.

Beginning in November 2023, immigrants requesting an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) based on a permanent role will be able to apply for a visa with a maximum validity of five years. With this action, the country hopes to attract more skilled immigrants to its workforce.

According to the new regulations, qualified immigrants may remain in New Zealand on an Accredited Employer Work Visa for up to 5 years. Unless they are on the road to permanent residence or have a pending application for permanent residence, they must leave the country for at least 12 months after reaching this milestone. To encourage immigrants to contribute to the workforce and society before gaining permanent residency, the Skilled Migrant Category Resident visa now requires applicants to get work experience.

After receiving a 3-year visa, holders of AEWVs may apply for another AEWV to increase their stay in New Zealand to a maximum of 5 years. For these personnel, employers won't require job checks. For those looking to settle there, New Zealand offers several skill-based options, including the Skilled Migrant Resident, Green List, Care Workforce, and Transport Sector Agreement pathways. Applicants have two options: submit an application immediately, or wait until they can work in New Zealand.

Candidates must adhere to predetermined pathways and general standards for age, health, character, and English language competency. To draw and keep talented immigrants in New Zealand, the maximum continuous stay length extension for holders of Accredited Employer Work Visas is an important step. As immigrants offer their talents and knowledge to numerous sectors, this strategy is anticipated to have a good impact on the community and the nation's economy.
