The Canadian government has introduced a new policy allowing
international students to work 20 hours per week off campus or full-time during
regular breaks.
This policy requires students to be in Canada or have re-entered Canada by December 31, 2023, be a study permit holder, and be studying at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
Foreign students with valid study permits will be able to
work unlimited hours off-campus during school breaks and full-time hours during
regular semesters as of November 15, 2022. However, this flexibility will
disappear on December 31, 2023, when the customary 20-hour limit will be
reinstated. Students who rely on off-campus employment for income or career
advancement should be aware of the deadline, as exceeding the 20-hour
restriction without formal authorization may jeopardize their study permits and
legal status in Canada.
The window for unlimited work hours is closing, but some
students may still be eligible for extended work privileges. To work more than
20 hours per week off-campus, students with study permits applied before October
7, 2022, must meet certain requirements. These include holding a valid permit,
studying full-time or part-time at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI),
maintaining an expired permit but maintaining status, and being in Canada or
re-entering Canada by December 31, 2023. Those applying to extend their permits
must have applied for the original extension on or before October 7, 2022, hold
a valid permit, study full-time or part-time at a DLI, be in Canada or re-enter
Canada by December 31, 2023, and have specific conditions allowing extended
off-campus work. Failure to comply could result in the termination of the
permit and deportation.
