South
Korea has announced the introduction of a work visa starting January 2024,
to accommodate digital nomads and remote workers.
This visa, which enables holders to remain and work in the country for a maximum of two years, aligns with the widespread practice of fusing work and travel. The booklet contains information on the government's immigration strategy, qualifying requirements, and visa specifics.
For
skilled employees connected to foreign companies, the work visa allows a
one-year stay that can be extended for a second year. It is appropriate for
extended travel arrangements involving spouses and children. Candidates must
earn more than twice Korea's gross national product (about USD 77,000) to be eligible. It is required to have evacuation coverage and comprehensive
medical insurance. This visa is only for remote labour; one must obtain
a separate work permit for on-the-ground employment or commercial activity. For
longer-term travel plans, this visa offers stability and flexibility.
The fourth edition of the government's foreign national-related policy plan lays forth tactics for controlling immigration intake and integration. These tactics include fighting illegal immigration, creating a special immigration office, and encouraging inclusion for disadvantaged immigrant children. The five-year plan guarantees equitable opportunities, fights social exclusion, and lowers the number of undocumented immigrants in Korea while promoting a more stable and secure environment for all citizens.
