Canada Modifies Work Permit Rules for Nigerians, Other Foreign Students

The Canadian government has announced a modification to its post-graduation work programme (PGWP) standards for Nigerians and other international students

As of February 15, 2024, individuals who have finished their master's degree in less than two years may apply for a three-year PGWP.

The country declared that as of September 1, 2024, international students enrolled in the curriculum licensing agreement program would no longer be eligible for PGWP. Nonetheless, PGWP and special measures for distance learning will continue to be in effect. After their studies in Canada are over, foreign students are granted the PGWP, an open work permit that lets them work as many hours as they want, anywhere, for any business. Completing a recognized educational program and a desire to temporarily reside in Canada are eligibility prerequisites.

Graduates from designated learning institutions (DLI) willing to work temporarily in Canada may apply for a Permanent Graduate Work Permit (PGWP). For eligibility, graduates must consult the DLI list. A housing shortage brought on by an influx of foreign students and migrant workers prompted the implementation of this development amid a housing prohibition on Nigerians and other foreign nationals.
