The Acting Director-General Captain Chris Najomo of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced that steps are being taken to reduce the high cost of airfare in the country. He stated this in a press release posted on the official X handle of the Authority.
Najomo set up a committee to look at what influences the cost of foreign travel in Nigeria. To guarantee a decrease in foreign airfares, the Authority has called meetings with airlines, stakeholders, and other organizations, demonstrating its awareness of the escalating expenses associated with international air travel.
“It has come to the notice of this Authority (NCAA)
about the increase and high cost of airfares, especially on the international
travel.
“NCAA, in a view of trying to make sure that these
airfares are brought down have decided to set up a high-powered committee
which will look at all the variances and how we can bring down these airfares
down.
“We’ve met with the airlines and other stakeholders
and other agencies to make sure that this is done,” he
stated.
The
aviation committee of the House of Representatives has been entrusted with
looking into the increase in the cost of international flights and the subpar
service provided by foreign airlines in Nigeria. A proposal to remedy these
expensive prices was sponsored by Honorable Moshood Olarewaju Oshun, who
emphasized that neighbouring West African countries have more affordable
flights. He also took issue with these carriers' outdated fleet of aircraft and
subpar customer service. Oshun said that if the issue is left unattended, it
may become more difficult for regular Nigerians to finance foreign travel,
which could hurt the country's economy.
