Australia and New Zealand are reforming their work visa systems with new occupation classification lists. Both use the same Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO). However, recognizing evolving labour markets, each is developing its system for more targeted immigration.
New Zealand's National Occupation List (NOL) takes effect November 20, 2024, created to be more responsive to its job market. Immigration New Zealand will use ANZSCO during a transition before fully switching to NOL in 2025.
Australia launched its Occupation Standard Classification for Australia (OSCA) on December 6, 2024, aligning visa requirements with its workforce needs. Like New Zealand, Australia will also have a transition period.
These changes are important for foreign workers. Visa applicants must ensure their skills match an occupation listed in the respective country's system. The goal is a more efficient visa process. Some comparability between systems will be maintained for trans-Tasman skill recognition.
\Foreign workers should consult immigration authorities or migration agents for guidance. These reforms aim to modernize immigration systems and attract needed skilled workers.
