Under Government Decree No. 450/2024, Hungary revamped its work visa regulations effective January 18, 2025. The updates introduce stricter eligibility criteria for foreign workers seeking employment in Hungary.
Only citizens of countries listed in Appendix 1 of the new decree will be eligible to apply for a Hungarian work visa with a residence permit. This change has increased the number of prospective workers from non-listed countries who may face restricted access to Hungary's labour market.
However, citizens of non-listed countries may still qualify if their home country has a recognized organization or office in Hungary. These entities must ensure compliance with Hungarian and EU regulations regarding foreign workers' admission and residence.
The list of eligible countries and recognized organizations is subject to updates, which will be published in the Official Bulletin annexed to the Hungarian Gazette. The Hungarian Immigration Office website will also provide the latest developments.
The new rules exempt applicants who submitted their Hungarian work visa applications before January 1, 2025, and completed payment by December 31, 2024.
Hungarian employers must adjust their recruitment strategies to comply with the new regulations, collaborating with recognized organizations will become crucial for hiring workers from third countries.
