France has implemented a new financial deposit requirement for non-EU students seeking entrance visas to the country. The move intended to ensure they had sufficient funds to cover their stay in the country. While the deposit amount has not been officially disclosed, it is understood to be refundable under specific circumstances. These include the student's planned departure from France, the successful renewal of their residence permit, or a change in their visa status. However, the deposit will be forfeited if the student fails to comply with departure regulations.
In addition to this new financial measure, the French government reinforces its oversight of long-term student permit holders. They will now be required to provide annual proof of enrollment in a recognized educational institution. This measure aims to enhance transparency and ensure students genuinely pursue their studies.
Despite these evolving regulations, France remains a prominent global hub for international education. According to recent data, the country hosted over 430,000 international students in the 2023-2024 academic year, marking a 4.5% increase from the previous year.
This represents 14% of the total student population in French higher education. According to United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) data from previous years, France holds the sixth position worldwide in terms of hosting international students. The primary countries of origin for these students include Morocco, Algeria, and China, with a notable increase in students from India in recent years.
Business and engineering schools have seen particularly significant growth in international student enrollment. This continued popularity underscores France's strong academic reputation and the appeal of its higher education system to students worldwide.
