The UK government is launching a new industrial strategy to attract the "world's brightest minds." This plan includes expanding key "top talent" visa routes, specifically the High Potential Individual (HPI) visa and the Global Talent visa.
The HPI visa will see a doubling of eligible universities for top international graduates by the next academic year. The Global Talent visa will also become more accessible, with an increased range of fellowships granting entry. Additionally, the Innovator Founder visa will be expanded to encourage international student entrepreneurs to start businesses in the UK.
A new £54 million global talent fund will attract 10 world-class researchers and their teams, covering relocation and research costs. A global talent taskforce will offer a "concierge service" for elite individuals, using the UK's international network to connect with top talent and boost the UK's attractiveness.
However, organisations like the Russell Group emphasise that upfront immigration costs remain a significant barrier for attracting international talent compared to other countries. This strategy aims to bring in global expertise to enhance UK economic growth, particularly in sectors such as AI, life sciences, and advanced manufacturing.
