The 26th International AIDS Conference
Venue: Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Date: 26–31 July 2026
AIDS 2026, the 26th International AIDS Conference, will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and
virtually from 26 to 31 July 2026. This gathering comes at a pivotal moment for the global HIV
response.
Amid an unprecedented funding crisis and significant cutbacks to HIV programmes, the world’s
largest conference on HIV and AIDS will bring together people living with HIV, researchers,
policymakers, healthcare professionals, funders, the media, and community representatives.
Over more than four decades, scientific advancements have transformed HIV into a manageable
condition for those with access to treatment. By the end of 2024, AIDS-related deaths had
decreased by 54% and new HIV infections by 40% compared to 2010. Today, effective treatment
can suppress the virus to undetectable and therefore untransmittable levels. Long-acting
Prevention options, including lenacapavir and cabotegravir injectables, are proving highly
successful, with long-acting oral technologies emerging soon.
However, UNAIDS data shows that progress has stagnated. In both 2023 and 2024, 1.3 million
people acquired HIV, and 630,000 died from AIDS-related causes. In 2024 alone, 9.2 million
people living with HIV lacked access to life-saving treatment. Persistent barriers such as stigma,
discrimination, criminalization, and structural inequalities continue to limit access to essential
services.
The suspension of US foreign aid, including PEPFAR, in early 2025 has deepened the global
funding crisis, threatening to reverse hard-won gains. This underscores the critical need for
countries to strengthen domestic financing, improve efficiencies, and prioritize sustainable HIV
responses.
We must work together to prevent the current crisis from rolling back global progress.
