The Federal Government of Nigeria, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has summoned the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa to a meeting over the high-rising tensions linked to recent protests against foreign nationals in South Africa.
According to an official press release issued in Abuja, the meeting is scheduled for Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Ministry’s headquarters, and will formally convey the Nigerian Government’s deep concern about the occurrence and recurrence of incidents in South Africa. The incident is believed to threaten the long-standing cordial relationship between the two nations.
At the center of the discussions are the ongoing demonstrations by certain groups in South Africa, as well as documented instances of maltreatment of Nigerian citizens and attacks on their businesses, which have sparked concern within Nigeria and prompted a diplomatic response.
The Ministry also acknowledged growing public discontent among Nigerians regarding the safety and welfare of their nationals in South Africa. However, it urged citizens to remain calm while reiterating the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting Nigerians living abroad.
The statement, signed by Ministry spokesperson Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, highlights Nigeria’s intention to address the issue through diplomatic dialogue while ensuring the safety, rights, and well-being of its citizens in South Africa.
