Etihad Airways Sets to Return to Nigeria

Etihad Airways is set to resume flight operations to Nigeria in March 2027, launching daily Boeing 787 Dreamliner flights between Abu Dhabi and Lagos. The announcement follows high-level discussions in Abuja between an Etihad delegation, led by Capt. Khalid Humaid Al Ali, and Nigeria's Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo.

Strategic Partnership with Air Peace

To broaden reach and travel flexibility, Etihad has established a codeshare agreement with Nigeria’s Air Peace.

 

• Seamless Connections: The agreement enables passengers to book journeys combining Air Peace’s domestic and regional routes with Etihad’s international network via Abu Dhabi.

 

• Regional Hub Development: The partnership reflects growing collaboration between local and global carriers, strengthening Nigeria’s position as a West African aviation hub.

 

Push for Expansion to Abuja

During the meeting, Minister Keyamo urged Etihad to consider adding direct routes to Abuja alongside its Lagos operations. Direct access from the nation's capital would eliminate domestic transit for northern travelers, offering greater convenience for diplomats, business leaders, and religious pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

 
Preparations and Economic Impact

Preparations for the March 2027 launch are actively underway:

• Terminal Space: The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has been instructed to secure terminal facilities for Etihad at Lagos's Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

 

• Working Committee: A joint committee of Nigerian aviation authorities and Etihad representatives has been formed to handle technical and operational logistics.

Etihad’s re-entry is expected to boost competition, enhance international flight options, and stimulate foreign investment, trade, and tourism across Nigeria.

Saudi Arabia has introduced a new Package Visa initiative designed to simplify travel planning for international visitors by combining visa applications with essential travel services under a single booking process. The move is expected to make it easier for tourists to arrange their trips while enhancing the overall visitor experience.

The new system allows eligible travellers to book their tourist visa alongside flights, accommodation at licensed hotels, and a range of tourism experiences through approved travel providers. By integrating these services into one package, visitors can complete much of their travel planning through a single platform, reducing the complexity often associated with international travel.

The initiative is being launched as a pilot programme in selected international markets, where qualified travel agencies and service providers will offer curated travel packages tailored to different visitor preferences. These packages are designed to provide a seamless journey from the booking stage through arrival and throughout the visitor’s stay in the Kingdom.

The Package Visa forms part of Saudi Arabia’s broader efforts to strengthen its tourism sector and attract more international visitors. The Kingdom has continued to introduce measures aimed at improving accessibility, streamlining travel procedures, and creating a more welcoming environment for tourists seeking leisure, cultural, and business experiences.

Initially, the programme is available in a number of selected markets, with plans to expand to additional countries as the pilot progresses. Travellers booking through authorised providers will benefit from verified accommodation options and professionally organised travel experiences that meet the country’s tourism standards. 

The latest initiative builds on Saudi Arabia’s ongoing visa reforms, including the introduction of electronic tourist visas, visa-on-arrival facilities, and transit visa programmes. Together, these measures have significantly improved access to the Kingdom and supported the rapid growth of its tourism industry.

The Package Visa also aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 strategy, which seeks to diversify the country’s economy by making tourism one of its key growth sectors. By leveraging digital technology and integrated travel solutions, the Kingdom aims to attract more leisure and business travellers while strengthening partnerships across the aviation, hospitality, and tourism industries.
