Kenya Reopens Airspace Despite Increasing Covid-19 Cases

Kenyan government has announced resumption dates for both local and international flights despite increasing Covid-19 cases.

The government of Kenya on Monday 6 July, announced 15 July and 1 August as resumption dates for both local and international flights respectively.

Following recent engagement between aviation stakeholders on safe return on air travel in the country, the government of Kenya resorted to reopen its airspace for commercial flights, as part of the country's economy reopening.

"Domestic flight shall resume effective July 15 in strict conformity with protocols from both the Ministry of Health and Civil aviation management". President Uhuru Kenyatta said.

Cabinet secretaries to the Ministry of Transport and Tourism James Macharia and Najib Balala who inspected the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport Nairobi and the Moi International Airport, Mombasa, expressed facilities readiness to flights.
The suspension of travel ban is expected to mark a relief to flight operators who have been limited to lifting cargo only following the ban on passenger flights.
According to part of protocol shared by Kenya Airways to staff members, passengers on both local and international flights will see one hour increase in check-in times, taking the total wait time by local and international passengers to two and three hours respectively. The additional time being set for new procedures on curbing the spread of Covid-19 virus.
Passengers will be required to keep social distancing while every aircraft will require deep cleaning and disinfection after each flight.
