No fewer than 10,000 British Airways workers are likely to lose their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic as the airline reached agreements in principle with its various unions.
According to BA's Chief Executive Officer Alex Cruz on Wednesday, he told lawmakers in London that the flag carrier airline of the United Kingdom has already seen 7,200 people leave as of Friday 11 September 2020.
He added that the company is still in discussions with some labor groups and has rowed back on plans to fire and rehire staff on new contracts.
The carrier's, part of IAG SA, has previously come under fire from parliamentarians and unions for its initial plan to lay off almost 12,000 workers, with the House of Commons Transport Committee accusing the BA of using the pandemic as an excuse to actualize its hidden agenda.
Cruz said British Airways is currently operating less than the average of its capacity as a result of the government's imposed quarantine rules which have negatively impacted the travel demands.
The management of BA and other European airlines are seeking tests on arrival and five days later from the government to shorten self-isolation requirements to increase travel demand.
