New South African Airways To Commence Operations

The embattled national carrier, South African Airways 'SAA' has begun official talks to resume operations.  The interim chief executive Thomas Kgokolo confirms.

According to Kgokolo during a SABC interview on Monday 19 April, he said that the carrier will soon start the process of retraining its pilots and ensuring that compliance requirements are met.

For a decade now, SAA has not been profitable and has been surviving on state bailouts and government debt guarantees. The operator was however placed under administration last year as the pandemic continued to batter its operations.

Kgokolo added that the business rescue process has now come through and identified the key financial and operational challenges for the airline.

A number of expenses have been cut down, including employee costs through retrenchments, meaning that the new airline will be significantly leaner. He stated.

Kgokolo also acknowledged the difficulties in restarting the airline during a global pandemic which has caused untold damage to the airline sector.

The restart will not be easy and that the new SAA will not do things the same way it did in the past.
