Barcelona Introduces Restrictions For Tourists In Order To Prevent Mass Tourism

Barcelona has taken action against large tour groups as the city is a well-liked travel destination. The new laws which take effect on July 1, include noise restrictions, passenger limits, and a one-way system for tours in several centers throughout the city.

Tour groups will need to switch from using megaphones to utilizing headsets and earpieces, or speaking at a reasonable volume to reduce noise. Only 24 of the city's streets and squares can be visited, and tour groups must also get used to a one-way system.

Due to the city's congested streets, tour groups will be limited to 15 individuals rather than 30. There are some historical sites that only permit groups of three to eight tourists. In order to avoid creating a problem for other pedestrians during these trips, tour leaders will be required to select locations with more open settings. Tour operators also advise customers to make reservations in advance rather than purchase tickets on the streets of the city, which can be chaotic given the volume of tourists.

The Netherlands has been putting effort into marketing initiatives to attract respectable tourists. Spanish officials have also implemented a "six drinks a day" restriction for all-inclusive resorts. Playa de Palma, one of Mallorca's most well-known tourist destinations, has implemented a dress code for bars and restaurants.

According to the Dutch Head of Economic Affairs, Victor Everhardt, "Bars and restaurants, shops, and cultural institutions in Amsterdam have been hard hit by the consequences of the coronavirus crisis. Visitors are returning to our city again, and this campaign directs them to types of visits to contribute to the economic recovery of the city and the region."
