Germany To Employ Foreigners As Airport Workers Amidst Summer Rush

Germany has announced plans to bring in foreign workers to help airports cope with a staff shortage during the busy summer season.

According to the Interior Ministry spokesperson, provision of housing and regular remuneration for temporary employees would be made. They would be required to pass the same security checks as other employees, such as baggage handlers, which often take two weeks.

ABL's president anticipates that between 1,000 and 2,000 workers would be admitted for a three-month period, most likely beginning in August. In the upcoming days, airports are anticipated to disclose their precise requirements. About one in five jobs in security, check-in, and aircraft handling are empty, according to the ADV airport organization.

"A time limit of a maximum of six months until the end of the year would have been nice," said Thomas Richter in an interview with Reuters. "It doesn't solve the problem, but it certainly helps."

The requirement for airport security, which Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized would not be compromised, conflicts with the want to promptly send in assistance.

The head of the German police union, Andreas Rosskopf, suggested using recently hired foreign workers for roles like luggage handling but cautioned against trying to place them in professions needing more security.
