London Heathrow Airport has stopped all airlines from selling summer tickets and has also introduced a cap on the number of passengers until September 2022. a move expected to lead to more flight cancellations.
More flights are expected to be canceled as The new limit of 100,000 daily passengers which amounts to a cut of 4,000 passengers per day has been enforced From Tuesday 11th July.
Many airlines have already emptied their cheap inventories and left only the expensive ones.
According to British Airway, "this incredibly disappointing news for our customers, coming at a time when we have already taken responsible action to reduce our summer schedule further, utilizing slot alleviation to minimize disruption and provide certainty for travelers and help airports manage their resource."
"As a result of Heathrow's request, we now need to take further action by taking a small number of additional flights out of our schedule. We will be contacting customers to apologize, advise them of their customer rights, and offer options including rebooking or refund. We also know that some customers may want to review their travel plans in light of the current travel challenges and have introduced a policy that will allow them to easily change travel dates, giving them additional flexibility."
Passengers who are due to fly from Heathrow on or before July 25th, have been informed that their tickets can still be rescheduled within the next 12 months of ticket validity without additional charges.
According to Heathrow chief executive, John Holland-Kaye some weeks ago, "passenger numbers have regularly exceeded 100,000, leading to periods when service drops to a level that is not acceptable".
Airline ground handlers and the airport could not handle such high volumes, hence introducing a cap Without which the Aiport predicted that daily departing seats over the summer would average 104,000 - giving a daily excess of 4,000.
