Some US Cities To Return To Mask Mandates As COVID Cases Rise

Some United States cities are considering a return to a face mask mandate as the Covid-19 cases continue to rise in some cities.

The reports have it that "a highly contagious offshoot of the omicron variant and is currently the dominant strain in the U.S., making up 77.9 percent of all cases."

Local health officials in Los Angeles recorded 8,091 new infections last week, a 50% rise from the beginning of the month. The most prevalent strain in the U.S. at the moment, accounting for 77.9% of all cases, is the highly contagious offshoot of the omicron variation known as coronavirus BA.5.

"We are not closing anything down. We are not asking people not to gather with the people they love," LA County Department of Public Health Dr. Barbara Ferrer told ABC News. "We're asking you to take a sensible step when there's this much transmission with a highly transmissible variant, to go ahead and put on a well-fitting high-filtration mask when you're indoors around others."

The CDC is considering reintroducing mask requirements in Seattle and the surrounding counties, according to officials, as the CDC now rates the region as having "high" transmission levels.

"We are actively considering if, and when, additional mandates may be needed, Seattle area health official Dr. Jeff Duchin says. And I'm really encouraging everyone now to please, let's make sure we've done all we can on a voluntary basis before we have to go there."

Due to growing COVID-19 rates, the mayor of Cincinnati is formally recommending that employees start wearing masks indoors. According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens stated that despite an increase in verified coronavirus infections, the city is not considering a new mask requirement "at this time." Dickens added the city will follow "science and CDC guidelines."
