The management of the Kenya Airways is requesting that South African Airways (SAA) transfer several of the routes it currently running across Europe and West Africa to Kenya Airways.
A significant step toward establishing a unified continental airline was made last November when the Kenyan carrier and SAA signed a Strategic Partnership Framework. In order to increase its client base, KQ, as the airline is called by its international code, wants to acquire SAA.
The airline wishes to pick up passengers for flights to London or Abuja from Johannesburg. KQ hopes to take advantage of the South African airline's problems to boost its earnings and visibility on both the European and West African routes.
"There are routes that KQ desires to take from South African Airways because of their strength on routes and available aircraft. We are still in negotiation on this matter," said Njoroge.
A Memorandum of Cooperation between SAA and Airbus SE aims to promote knowledge, expertise, innovation, digital technologies, and best practices. Six Airbus SE aircraft operated by SAA are now serving nine domestic and international destinations. Kenya Airways pilots were trained in South Africa as part of the initiative, according to SAA's Public Prosecution Service.
