Azman Airlines' operation has been suspended after failing the renewal audits for its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).
An airline operator is given permission to conduct certain commercial air transport activities using an AOC, an aviation safety instrument.
The airline's AOC expired in the first quarter
of this year, and NCAA had been attempting to renew it with the airline but had
repeatedly failed. As a result, travelers who had already booked flights with
the airline are stranded, causing major chaos at the airports.
Hundreds of travelers were stranded at Lagos, Abuja, Kano, and Kaduna airports. Some travelers were seen at the
Muritala Mohammed Airport Two (MMA2) trying to get tickets from a different
airline, while others were unsuccessful in their attempts to obtain a refund
from the airline's counter workers.
Mr. Idris Aliyu, one of the affected travelers,
complained about the fact that he had arrived at the airport at 5:20 am for a
6:30 am departure but was shocked when airline workers informed him and other
passengers that their flight had been canceled.
He stated, "I came as early as
possible to the airport to catch a flight to Abuja for an early morning meeting
I have in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), but I was surprised when I was
told I could not travel. There is so much chaos at this airport right now.
"No one was informed of this
development by the airline. I think in a sane society, passengers would have
been informed earlier so that they could make alternative arrangements, but
that is not the case here.
"I wanted to buy another ticket to Abuja now to catch up with my scheduled appointment, but the fare is outrageous. Some of them now sell their tickets at N100,000 and above, and this is just a one-way ticket."
