Hong Kong Lifts COVID-19 Restrictions for All Categories of Travelers

The Hong Kong government announced the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions on Tuesday, declaring that international travelers will no longer be subject to movement limitations upon arrival.

The government has decided to stop requiring citizens to enter public spaces with a COVID-19 scanning device. Also, foreign visitors can go to pubs and restaurants the moment they arrive.

Chief executive of Hong Kong, John Lee, said, "We have made these two decisions because we have considered the data and the risks."

According to officials, the new COVID-19 travel rules took effect on Wednesday, December 14, 2022. However, some places will still demand proof of immunization to enter. Hong Kong decided to lift the restrictions a day after mainland China stated it would stop using its COVID-19 tracking program.

Throughout the pandemic, a mobile application called "LeaveHomeSafe" connected to locals' immunization status regulated access to public and commercial areas. Business organizations, diplomats, and many locals demanded that the strict COVID-19 restrictions be lifted as a result of the negative effects they had on the tourism sector and the economy as a whole.
