Several Flights Disrupted Over Cold Snap

After the snow, ice, and freezing fog hit the UK on Sunday, passengers faced delays and cancellations at airports on Monday.

Due to inclement weather on Sunday, Gatwick and Stansted had to close their runways. Before leaving, travelers visiting UK airports are advised to verify their itinerary and flight status with their airline. Gatwick saw almost 90 departures canceled between noon and midnight on Sunday, while at least another 37 were canceled on Monday. The worst-affected carrier was EasyJet, and flights at Heathrow, Gatwick, and Manchester airports were also canceled or delayed.

Additionally, London City Airport reported that due to aircraft being out of position following the "significant amount of cancellations" on Sunday night, there was "some inconvenience this morning."

"We encourage passengers to check their flight status with their airline for the latest information," a spokeswoman said.

British Airways cancels more than 70 flights on Monday to and from Heathrow. Gatwick Airport temporarily shut down one of its runways on Sunday at 17:55 GMT. An airport representative for London Luton cautioned that Sunday's snowy conditions might cause aircraft delays. Some travelers criticized airlines for failing to alert them of cancellations. Others claimed that the ice conditions had made it impossible for them to exit planes. It stated that the airport was still experiencing delays and cancellations on Monday.
