Netherlands Lifts Ban on Family Reunions

The Netherlands' government has announced its decision to temporarily lift the prohibitions on family reunions for asylum seekers who have previously been granted residency in the country.

The limits were put in place back in 2022, according to Eric van der Burg, state secretary for justice and security in the Netherlands will be postponed until the Dutch administrative courts deliver a definitive ruling. It will no longer be necessary for family members of asylum seekers who have been granted status to wait at least 15 months before they can join their relatives in the Netherlands. Additionally, the same stated that relatives will only be permitted to enter the nation if they can show that they have enough housing.

In August 2022, the Netherlands removed restrictions on family gatherings that had been put in place as a result of a housing crisis and a significant influx of asylum seekers into its detention facilities. Dutch courts decided that family reunifications should resume now that the restrictions have been abolished. The government argued that after caring for the asylum seekers already present, they should permit families to reunite.

The Netherlands' population grew by 111,000 people in 2022, and it was predicted that growth would moderate during the next five years. Statistics Netherlands claims that this sharp increase will accompany greater longevity and be related to migration. By 2024, those over the age of 65 will make up around a quarter of the population.
