The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, met with the Ethiopian Airlines Board Chairman, Girma Wake, on Sunday in Addis Ababa, where they discussed the operation of Nigeria Air.
President Buhari told the Board Chairman that re-launching a national carrier was a "weighty decision" by the Nigerian Government and that he was confident that "things will be alright."
Wake has asked that the legal issue preventing Ethiopian
Airlines' 49%-owned Nigeria Air from starting operations be resolved. Also, he
asked for the return of airline funds that were stuck in the nation as a result
of difficulties with foreign exchange. From the airline's founding in Nigeria
60 years ago, he added, it has received favorable treatment.
‘‘Nigeria is not just a market but a hub for aviation in
Africa. Nigeria is a special country and nobody travels more around the globe
than Nigerians,” he stated.
Ethiopian Airlines intends to increase daily flight services from Addis Ababa to Lagos and from Abuja to Addis Ababa as part of an expansion of its operations in Nigeria. As soon as all legal concerns have been handled, the airline and its partners are prepared to launch operations on Nigeria Air.
