The IRCC has announced that the
post-study work permits for the cohort of international students have been
extended by 18 months, providing relief to international students who represent
an important part of the workforce and contribute significantly to the
country’s economic growth.
The extension was announced on March 19, 2023, by Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship. He said that it will enable foreign graduates to remain in Canada for a longer period and get useful work experience. The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWP) enables foreign graduates to receive an open work permit and get important work experience in Canada. Graduates are offered the chance to work in Canada after completing their studies, allowing them to gain job experience and adapt to Canadian society.
The policy known as the PGWP
extension enables overseas graduates with PGWPs that have recently expired or
are about to expire to be eligible for an additional or extended work permit,
enabling them to stay longer and obtain more work experience for up to 18
months. The extension is advantageous to both foreign graduates and the
Canadian economy since it enables qualified candidates to continue supporting
the Canadian economy while obtaining crucial job experience in advance of
submitting an application for permanent residency. Providing highly trained
individuals who are already incorporated into the labor market, also enables
companies to keep highly skilled talent and helps address Canada's labor
problem. Foreign nationals who were eligible for the 2022 PGWP facilitative
measure and whose PGWP has already expired in 2023 may apply for an extra
18-month work permit.
