Canada Extends Work Permit Policy for Foreign Citizens

Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada have announced a temporary policy extension that will allow foreign citizens in Canada as visitors to apply for work permits without having to leave the country. The temporary policy will be in place until February 28, 2025. Due to the Canadian labor shortage, this is advantageous to both job seekers and employers. On March 1st, IRCC released a statement about the new rule.

Due to the ongoing effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, this temporary policy, which was supposed to conclude on February 28, 2023, has been extended for an extra two years until February 28, 2025. This is fantastic news for travelers wishing to work in Canada because it eliminates the need for them to leave the country to secure a work visa, as well as for employers who are experiencing a labor shortage.

"Foreign nationals who are in Canada as visitors and who receive a valid job offer will continue to be able to apply for and receive a work permit without having to leave the country until February 28th, 2025," IRCC stated.

Until recently, those who wanted to work in Canada had to apply for their initial work visa before traveling there. As a result, the procedure took longer than necessary and caused inconvenience.

This temporary public policy requires applicants to meet several requirements, including having a valid visitor visa, having a job offer accompanied by a labor market impact assessment (LMIA) or one that is exempt from one, applying by February 28, 2025, for an employer-specific work permit, and fulfilling all other standard eligibility requirements. Anyone with visitor status in Canada who recently had a valid work permit can apply for interim work authorization and start working for their new company until their work permit application is finalized. This approach will help Canadian employers access a wider pool of applicants for open positions and is a step in the right direction toward enhancing the accessibility and inclusivity of Canada's immigration system.
