Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport To Reduce Passengers' Flights to 460,000 Per Year

Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam has decided that a decrease in annual flight volume from 500,000 to 460,000 is an essential and intermediate step to reduce emissions and noise pollution in the airport and some parts of the city.

The present cap of 500,000 flight movements has been reduced by 40,000 by Royal Schiphol Group, but a timeline for the reductions still has to be established.

According to the airport's statement, “We are fully committed to reducing noise nuisance and emissions. To reconcile these concerns, a new system must be put in place soon that protects local residents and offers perspective and clarity for the aviation sector.”

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has contested the legality of the Dutch government's mandated flight reductions, claiming that this contravenes both European Union Regulation 598/2014 and the Chicago Convention, a legally binding international accord to which the Netherlands is a signatory. The IATA has urged the creation of a new system to safeguard local citizens as well as give the aviation industry perspective and clarity. The government has been working on this for close to 10 years.

Willie Walsh, the general director of IATA, has criticized the Netherlands for deleting links in defiance of international agreements and EU legislation. He also pointed out that the Dutch government has adopted a hostile stance toward aviation, emphasizing flying restrictions rather than cooperating with businesses to lower noise and emissions, reinstate jobs, and boost the economy.

IATA emphasized the airline sector's goal to decrease CO2 emissions to net zero by 2050, which involves introducing quieter planes and acquiring a new fleet. Furthermore, the industry's CO2 reduction plan calls for obtaining sustainable aviation fuels, of which airlines flying to and from the Netherlands have been key users.
