The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have been urged by the National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies (NANTA) to propose remedies to the problems caused by airfare profiteering in the aviation industry.
NANTA's national president, Susan Akporiaye, made the call while visiting the FCCPC's office in Abuja on Thursday.
Akporiaye went to the FCCPC to get
assistance and solutions for the dispute with foreign airlines over unfair
ticket prices in Nigeria. She asserted that it was past time for the
association to seek advice and decide the best course of action about the high
rates charged by foreign airlines and the closure of reduced inventories to
travel agencies throughout Nigeria. Additionally, Akporiaye stated that the
group was devoted to defending its members' businesses against abuse and unfair treatment from any source. The FCCPC was asked to help NANTA
and the Nigerian traveling public end unfair practices in the
downstream aviation industry.
“We strongly view from our
professional experience and knowledge of fare mechanism, that the reactions of
foreign airlines on trapped funds is grossly unfair to the Nigerian traveling
public and gravely threatens the survival of NANTA members,” she stated.
The vice-chairman of the FCCPC,
Babatunde Irukera, thanked NANTA's leadership for supporting the
ecosystem for government-structured competition and consumer protection in his
response and assured him that the commission will make the required
interventions.
“We at FCCPC welcome your
request for guidance and will do our best to help determine possible steps to
solve this problem which affects Nigerians,” he said.
“But, we will first put up an investigation team to determine what led to this impasse and possibly infractions against the traveling public.
