The ambassadors of the European Union EU member states have accepted the
Council's negotiating mandate on a proposal to digitalize the Schengen visa
application process. This will allow applicants to apply for visas online, and
the current visa sticker will be replaced by a digital visa.
The digital Schengen visa, proposed by Swedish Minister for Migration Maria Malmer Stenergarz, will make it easier for legitimate travelers to apply and improve the security of the Schengen area. Online visa applications will reduce the number of trips to the consulate for travelers, resulting in smoother processes for national administrations and eliminating the risk of visa sticker falsification and theft.
Following the proposed regulations, a new visa
application platform will be available for Schengen visa applications, enabling
applicants to submit pertinent information, upload electronic copies of their
travel and supporting documents, pay visa fees, and obtain notifications of
visa decisions. Also, this portal will let applicants pay their visa fees and
get alerts when their visa applications have been approved.
The application process for visas should become faster,
simpler, and safer with the implementation of the digital Schengen visa. On the
final text of the legislation, the EU will negotiate with the European
Parliament. This will improve, streamline, and secure the visa application
procedure.
