Switzerland Eases Work Permit Process For Third-Country Citizens

After a decision by Swiss authorities to ease the rules on work permit procedures, qualified workers from third countries are now subjected to simpler procedures when attempting to obtain a work permit in Switzerland.

The Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP) has implemented measures to reduce administrative hurdles, speed up procedures, and increase legal certainty for companies. Qualified workers from third countries are eligible to obtain a work permit in Switzerland if there is a need for it and it is in Switzerland's economic interest. The Federal Council was informed of the steps taken in the meantime.

"Since February 1, 2023, the cantonal labor market and migration authorities have been able to take into account the situation of those companies that are looking for qualified specialists in occupations that are particularly affected by the shortage of skilled workers. Specifically, in such occupations, they can lay out the requirements for professional qualifications and proof of priority for domestic employees more generously," it stated.

The Aliens and Integration Act (AIG) was amended by the Federal Department of Justice and Police (FDJP), allowing cantons to give simplified permission for foreign nationals to transition from employed to self-employed employment and expedite the process for work permit requests.

"The cantons reject the introduction of an express fee surcharge for the accelerated processing of work permit applications," it stated.

According to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) of Switzerland, the unemployment rate was 2.1% in 2022, the lowest it had been in 20 years, and there was a labor shortage. The unemployment rate dropped from 2.6 in 2021 to its lowest recorded level in 20 years, a reduction of 0.5 percentage points.
