Kenya Airways
and China Southern Airlines are travelling set to increase their connectivity by promoting
the interconnectivity of their networks and reactivating their interline
agreement in an effort to capitalize on the revival of international travel to
China.
On April 27, reservations for the interline service between Kenya Airways and China Southern were available, enabling travellers to take a single ticket to travel through Nairobi, Guangzhou, and Shanghai. China Southern provides transportation to Kenya Airways' 35 destinations for passengers travelling to Africa, while Kenya Airways provides transportation to China for travellers traveling to China Southern's domestic and Asia Pacific regional networks.
"The agreement will assist
in restoring connectivity for both airlines’ passengers to points on the
respective carriers’ networks via Nairobi, Guangzhou, and Shanghai using a
single ticket and one baggage policy," Kenya Airways stated.
To increase their accessibility to locations in central and western Africa, Kenya Airways and China Southern have agreed to operate interline flights. The interline agreement puts the two carriers in a better position to compete with their Ethiopian and Gulf competitors' current monopolies in the Asia-Africa connector markets. The interline agreements are crucial for Kenya Airways' ability to access a larger market in Asia since it only flies to Guangzhou from Bangkok at the moment. Chinese airlines have a modest presence in Eastern, Central, and West Africa, with their attention mostly on South Africa and the islands in the Indian Ocean. The codeshare agreement between Kenya Airways and Royal Air Maroc was renewed in December of last year. The airline has signed partnerships with South African Airways in November 2021 and Delta Air Lines in June 2021.
