Cyprus Sets To In Schengen Information System

After several years of efforts and trials, Cyprus is finally set to join the Schengen Information System on July 25, 2023.

The island will be having access to the Schengen Information Exchange System, which means that information on 90 million citizens will be provided to the security agencies, making it easier for the police, customs, and immigration services to cooperate.

According to Charis Philippides, Director of the EU and International Police Cooperation Directorate, this will help police quickly identify and stop threats to the security of Cypriot citizens. By doing so, they can share information with other EU members about things like wanted individuals, people who are illegally residing on EU soil, people who are connected to terrorist groups, and vulnerable people who are at risk of being kidnapped.

Furthermore, someone who has committed a crime in Cyprus will be unable to flee, and the authorities in Cyprus will be informed in real-time when that person is wanted in another nation, eliminating the need for the lengthy procedures that permit the offender to disappear.
