Non-EU Doctors Can Now Work In Madrid Without Spanish Nationality

Madrid, the capital of Spain, has announced that medical professionals from non-European countries will no longer require Spanish nationality to work in the country.

Healthcare shortages have been a major problem in Madrid, which has led officials to try to draw in more foreigners. Although a new facility was just established by the city, unions claim that the current staff is unable to handle all patients. Foreign experts will therefore not be subject to the eased rules.

To solve the scarcity of doctors, Isabel Daz Ayuso, President of the Community of Madrid, announced that non-EU physicians would be excluded from the three-year nationality requirement. With this change, it is hoped that more non-EU personnel will be drawn into providing services in fields like paediatrics and family medicine. Dr Manuel Martnez-Sellés, president of the Official College of Physicians of Madrid, praised the adjustment but emphasised the need for long-lasting changes, such as raising economic compensation and reducing ratios.

Madrid's decision to permit non-EU doctors to practice in Spain for up to three years without possessing Spanish nationality could result in shortages in other regions of the nation because community physicians are departing for other EU nations and it is difficult to keep them in the country. Other regions of the nation may experience shortages as a result of this.
