Canadian government has emphasized that International students must comply with the most recent regulations introduced in the country. This includes the new study permit application form (IMM1294), temporary work-study policies, on-campus work opportunities for full-time students, off-campus work regulations, and expiring extended work hours, as of December 1, 2023.
These modifications are critical for people studying
academic, professional, vocational, or other courses at a Designated Learning
Institution (DLI) in Canada for more than six months.
International students seeking a study visa in Canada
must utilize the new IMM1294, which applies to both paper and online
applications, beginning December 1, 2023. Applications submitted using the old
form after December 1st will not be accepted. Maintain your study permit
requirements by adhering to the terms and updating your online account profile
regularly. Foreign nationals enrolled in six or fewer courses
are exempt from the study permit requirement. Until June 27, 2026, certain
foreign nationals with valid work permits or outstanding renewals can work and
study without a study permit.
Full-time postsecondary students can work on campus without
a work permit as long as they have a study permit and are enrolled. Some
students can work off-campus full-time during academic holidays and
part-time (up to 20 hours per week) during regular academic sessions. However,
existing restrictions permitting international students to work in Canada for
an unlimited number of hours are slated to expire. International students were
permitted to work more than 20 hours per week off campus from November 15, 2022, until December 31, 2023. Students having off-campus employment authorization
will no longer be subject to the 20-hour workweek limit until December 31,
2023.
