Cyprus has relaxed its citizenship rules for foreign nationals
working in research and innovation to attract tech talent.
The Cypriot House of Representatives amended the Civil Registry Law, allowing the interior minister to grant fast-track citizenship. The amendment also reduces the time required for foreign nationals to reside in Cyprus before applying for citizenship and relaxes the requirement for Greek language proficiency. The initiative is intended to attract tech talent to the island.
The amended law allows foreign nationals in the research and
innovation sector to apply for expedited citizenship through a simplified
process. The interior minister makes the final decision, allowing qualifying
applicants to gain citizenship. The aim is to attract specialists in specialized
disciplines, invest in the country's future, and provide economic benefits.
Residency requirements, Greek language competence, financial self-sufficiency,
a clean criminal background, and good character are all required. Processing
time is limited to eight months. Family relatives of applicants may also be
eligible for citizenship. The bill aims to attract tech talent, encourage
workers to stay, and enhance the Cypriot economy.
The new law provides protections to guarantee that only
qualified and worthy people are granted citizenship. Candidates must be
physically present in Cyprus and have genuine ties to the island.
